Skeleton Coast Safari

Skeleton Coast – The World’s Largest Ship Cemetary

The Skeleton Coast stretches along the northern part of Namibia’s coastline, spanning approximately 500 kilometers from the Kuene River in the north to the Ugab River in the south. Covering a vast area of around 16,000 square kilometers, this remote and desolate region is one of the most inhospitable yet hauntingly beautiful places on Earth.

The area got its iconic name from the whale and seal bones that once littered the shore, most likely was due to the whaling industry. Although that’s not the case, the coast now holds the skeletal remains of more than a thousand shipwrecks, victims of the rough seas, thick fog and relentless stormy winds that make navigation treacherous.

Although the Skeleton Coast may sound like a scary place, it is teeming with wildlife. A Skeleton Coast safari offers the chance to see rhinos, elephants, desert lions, giraffes, zebras and much more. Many of these animals have adapted to the harsh desert climate and rely on the water from the daily fog rolling in from the Atlantic Ocean.

Skeleton Coast Safari Adventures

The Skeleton Coast is one of the most remote and rugged safari destinations in the world, offering a truly unique wildlife experience. The animals living here have adapted to the harsh environment in order to survive in the arid desert landscape where water is scarce.

When going on a Skeleton Coast safari you’ll have the opportunity to witness desert-adapted elephants, which have learned to traverse the dunes in search of water and vegetation. You may also spot black rhinos, known for their resilience in extreme conditions, as well as certain species of antelopes that can go long periods without drinking water.

Aside from the incredible wildlife, one of the most hauntingly beautiful sights that you’ll get to see on a Skeleton Coast safari is the legendary shipwrecks scattered along the shoreline. These remains serve as eerie reminders of the region’s treacherous waters. Some of the most famous wrecks such as the Eduard, Bohlen and the Dunedin Star, are now partially buried in the desert sands, creating an almost surreal landscape where history and nature intertwine.

Best Time to Visit the Skeleton Coast

Depending on when you decide to visit the Skeleton Coast you may have a slightly different experience, however the difference between the dry- and wet season aren’t as huge as other parts of Africa. Here’s what you can expect when visiting during both seasons:

May - October (Dry Season)

During the dry season, the mornings tend to be foggy with mostly sunny afternoons. There are almost no rain during the dry season, so if you’re visiting during this time be sure to pack sunscreen. Even though this is the winter season, the temperatures rise to around 25-26 °C during the day with cooler temperatures during the night at around 11-12 °C. With less water available during the dry season, animals tend to gather around rivers and waterholes which makes them easier to spot.

November – April (Wet Season)

Although this period is known as the wet season, it usually involves very little rain. The combination of ocean fog and the cold sea winds helps keep temperatures from becoming unbearably hot, but be sure to pack some sunscreen to avoid sunburns. Daytime temperatures can reach around 28-29 °C, making for warm but comfortable conditions. Despite the minimal rainfall, the desert becomes noticeably greener during this time, creating stunning landscapes where arid dunes blend with lush vegetation.

No matter what time of year you decide to visit the Skeleton Coast you’ll have an unforgettable experience filled with remarkable wildlife encounters and breathtaking landscapes. Book your next adventure with us at World Adventure Tours!
