Wildlife Encounters and Unreal Landscapes
This 9-day and 8-night camping and accommodated safari, departing on Tuesdays, is a really comprehensive way to experience the Best of Namibia in a well-balanced time frame. It all starts with a search for fantastic wildlife encounters in Etosha National Park, looking for predators and prey like lion and leopard, elephant and giraffe, black rhino, and eland, all in the mix of possible sightings. The mineral pan ‘’The Great White Space’’ from which Etosha takes its name is 22,000 square km of desolate, dazzling expanse and can be seen from space. Beautiful Damaraland gives a unique “Big Sky Experience“, where the towering pink granite koppies seem to touch the very sky on the horizon. Stunning in every season this region of mountains and grassland, trees and riverbeds, desert elephants, and desert rhinos, puts real meaning into the words ‘’breathtaking’’. Meet some of the locals while traveling through Damaraland, Himba, Herero & Damara people, often in traditional dresses, and continue under the shadow of Namibia’s highest mountain, The Brandberg, on the way down to the Atlantic Ocean and the famous Skeleton Coast.
Swakopmund and the Majestic Namib Desert
Next follows the unusual and quirky town of Swakopmund, a place to relax and recharge, and later awaits more adventure on a magical trip to the centre of the Namib – the oldest desert in the world. Cross the tropic of Capricorn on the way down to the dune fields and catch the soft light of sunrise as we head for Dead Vlei and its collection of skeleton trees and continue to Sossusvlei, where the waters end for an ancient river. Oryx and springbok are often seen in this sandy land, but the dunes are also home to a full menagerie of reptiles, beetles, insects, rodents and birds. All these creatures are uniquely desert-adapted to survive in this waterless wonderland using super-power evolutionary adaptations.
Natural Wonders and the World’s Second Largest Canyon
The Namib Desert is internationally recognized as a top biodiversity hot spot in a desert habitat. Climbing a towering sand dunes is an experience unique to Namibia. Big Daddy, Big Mamma and Dune 45 are all waiting to be conquered if you are feeling intrepid and want to experience the view from such a lofty perch. Witness the crumbling yet beautiful and historic architecture in Luderitz, learn about the desert diamonds and visit the diamond ghost town at Kolmanskop. Finally, it’s time for the “canyon” part of this journey – the incredible Fish River Canyon – the second largest canyon on earth! And last but not least, visit the unusual and ancient quiver tree forest on the way back to the city.

“We were completely blown away by the sights and sounds of Namibia during our recent camping safari with WAT. Anna was fantastic when planning our trip, always available to answer any questions. We were very impressed by the service of our guides Steinner and Klugger who were knowledgeable about the trip and expert campers. The food and service was very good. We got to see lots of animals and beautiful sceneries. I have no complaint because the experience beat our expectations!”

Day 1
Windhoek to Etosha National Park
Your adventure begins with a pick-up at 07:00 from your accommodation in Windhoek, followed by a short pre-departure meeting. We head north, stopping briefly in Otjiwarongo to gather last-minute supplies, and enjoy a light lunch pack en route. Upon entering the iconic Etosha National Park, we game drive our way to Halali Lodge. Etosha spans over 22,000 km² and is home to 114 mammal species, 350 bird species, and even a single species of fish.
There are excellent chances of spotting wildlife at various waterholes along the way. We aim to arrive just before sunset, with time to settle into rooms equipped with en-suite bathrooms and tea/coffee facilities. Halali is named after a European hunting call, symbolizing the end of hunting—an appropriate name for this sanctuary where wildlife is now fully protected.
After dark, visit Moringa Waterhole, just a short walk from camp. This floodlit oasis is popular with elephants and the critically endangered black rhino, offering memorable nighttime wildlife viewing.

Exploring Etosha and Anderson Gate
We start early to make the most of the day. Sunrise is a prime time for spotting predators like lions as they return from the hunt. After breakfast at Halali, we pack up and head out for more game driving. Etosha’s dry landscape makes its waterholes critical gathering spots for wildlife.
A highlight today is a visit to the Etosha Pan, a 4,700 km² salt flat so vast it’s visible from space. We exit the park near sunset through Anderson Gate and make a short drive to our lodge at Etosha Village. You’ll settle into a spacious twin room with modern en-suite bathroom, followed by a hearty dinner prepared by your guide.

Etosha to Swakopmund via Damaraland
After breakfast, we set off toward the Skeleton Coast via scenic Damaraland, famous for its open grasslands, pink granite boulders, and big skies. Along the way, we may meet Himba, Herero, and Damara women selling handcrafted souvenirs in traditional dress—a great chance to support local artisans.
We enjoy a picnic lunch under the shadow of Brandberg, Namibia’s tallest mountain. By afternoon, we reach the misty Atlantic coastline and the hauntingly beautiful Skeleton Coast. A stop at the Zeila shipwreck near Henties Bay offers a dramatic photo opportunity.
We arrive in Swakopmund by late afternoon and check in to Hotel A La Mer. This coastal town blends German colonial charm with desert landscapes and excellent dining. Your guide can recommend restaurants for dinner.

Swakopmund to Sesriem
The morning is free for optional activities like quad biking or sandboarding, or simply strolling through Swakopmund. We depart around 11:30, heading east across the Namib gravel plains. The dramatic Kuiseb and Gaub Passes offer fantastic views as we descend into ancient canyons.
We pause at the Tropic of Capricorn for photos before arriving in Sesriem. Our camp is set beneath a giant camelthorn tree, with glimpses of the towering red dunes in the distance, setting the stage for tomorrow’s desert adventure.

Sossusvlei and Deadvlei
We rise before dawn to catch sunrise over the desert. First stop: Dune 45, a perfect viewpoint for watching light transform the sand into hues of orange and red. After breakfast, we continue into the Tsauchab River bed by 4×4 to reach iconic Sossusvlei.
Here we explore Deadvlei, a striking pan filled with 1,000-year-old camelthorn trees and surrounded by towering dunes. There’s time to explore on foot or climb one of the world’s tallest dunes.
In the afternoon, we visit Sesriem Canyon, carved over millennia by water and time. If energy allows, we finish the day with sunset views from Elim Dune before a relaxed evening back at camp.

Sesriem to Klein Aus Vista
Today’s scenic drive is through ever-changing desert scenery, mountains, and open grassland. We are continuing our long drive south, and our destination is the tiny community of Aus, located in the Aus Mountains above the plains of the Namib Desert.
Aus was formerly the site of a prisoner-of-war camp set up by the South African army to house German prisoners during the Second World War. Our actual destination today is Klein Aus Vista, located just outside Aus and inside the private Gondwana Sperrgebiet Rand Park. We aim to arrive in the early afternoon and set up camp, giving us time to stretch our legs on the un-guided hiking trails on the property. The landscape is wide open vistas and we are hoping for a spectacular sunset.
🍽 Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
🏨 Accommodation: Campsite near Klein Aus Vista or Similar
Luderitz and Kolmanskop Ghost Town
We drive west on a sealed road through sweeping desert plains toward the coast. Keep an eye out for Namibia’s wild horses, roaming freely in the harsh but beautiful environment. Their origins are mysterious—perhaps from German cavalry horses or the estate of Duwisib Castle.
We explore the ghost town of Kolmanskop, once a wealthy diamond mining settlement with modern amenities. A guided tour reveals its rich history and eerie charm, as the desert slowly reclaims its buildings.
Afterward, we continue to Luderitz and visit Diaz Point, where the Portuguese explorer landed in 1487. With its pounding surf and strong winds, it remains one of Namibia’s most dramatic coastal spots.
We return to Aus in time for sundowners and one last chance to see the wild horses.

Day 8
Fish River Canyon and Quiver Tree Forest
We begin early, heading southeast to Fish River Canyon—second in size only to the Grand Canyon. From our lookout, we admire Hell’s Bend, a massive river meander surrounded by tortured rock formations. The canyon stretches 160 km long, up to 27 km wide, and 550 m deep.
Continuing north via Keetmanshoop, we reach the Quiver Tree Forest, home to over 250 otherworldly trees. Despite their name, they’re not actually trees but giant aloes once used by the San to make quivers for arrows. Some specimens are estimated to be over 200 years old.
Tonight is our last evening together, shared around a warm campfire beneath Namibia’s starry skies.
🍽 Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
🏨 Accommodation: Campsite at the Quiver Tree Forest or Similar
Day 9
Return to Windhoek
We travel north on smooth tar roads, passing Brukkaros Volcano, a rare geological site formed by steam eruptions millions of years ago. Further along, we pass near Gibeon, site of a massive prehistoric meteorite impact that scattered metal fragments across the landscape.
We continue through the towns of Mariental and Rehoboth, stopping for a final picnic lunch along the way. Arrival in Windhoek is scheduled for late afternoon. You’ll be dropped off at your accommodation.
🍽 Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
🏨 Accommodation: None (end of safari)
